Two paid links, four refusals, and the reasoning for each

The full account of how this site earns anything: which links pay, where they appear, what we get told, and the four ways of being paid that we turned down — including the one that would have earned the most.

The two that pay

Socket Sense carries two paid links. Both go to sellers of dental discount plans — DentalPlans.com and Careington — and both appear on cost pages, underneath a paragraph that says they are paid before you reach them. Every such link carries the markup that tells search engines it is a paid link, and the redirect path they use is blocked in our robots file.

A discount plan is not insurance. Nothing is underwritten, no claim is filed, there is no annual maximum, and nothing is reimbursed: a member pays a reduced fee at the desk, on the day, to a dentist who has agreed to that plan's fee list. We print that sentence beside every one of these links because "coverage" is precisely what somebody holding a four-figure surgical quote wants to hear, and a membership is not coverage.

We publish no commission rate for either company. The rates we have access to came out of aggregator directories rather than from inside a network account, and an unconfirmed rate printed as a fact is the same category of error as an unconfirmed fee.

The four we turned down

Being paid when a reader books an appointment

There is an open programme that pays for a completed dental booking, and on a site about tooth extraction it would be the obvious money. We are not taking it. Several pages here open by telling a reader to stop reading and be seen tonight; a payment that only arrives when they go through one particular booking funnel puts money on one side of that sentence. The sentence is worth more.

Recovery products

The eating page and the first-day page would carry links to ice packs, gauze, irrigation syringes, soft-food boxes and mouth rinses without anybody blinking. None of those objects appears in the published guidance this site quotes. The honest answer on both pages is food already in the kitchen plus the sheet the surgery handed over, and a commission would start bending that answer within a month.

Clinics, chains and anybody who books for them

No dental practice, chain, group practice, oral-surgery group or facilitator is named, ranked, recommended or linked anywhere on this site, paid or unpaid. This is the lane where a reader is most likely to act on a name tonight, and we have no basis on which to give one.

Lenders, medical credit cards and pay-later products

A surgical quote is a common moment to be offered credit, and there is money in passing people along to it. We have verified nothing about any of those products and are not equipped to; a link would be a recommendation we cannot support.

Why this page is written down

Because a refusal that lives only in somebody's head reverses itself quietly. This page has to be rewritten in public before any of the four above could change, and the rewrite would sit here with a date on it. That is the whole mechanism, and it is deliberately awkward.

What the money does and does not buy

It does not buy a mention. No company has seen a page before publication, none has been sent one, and none has any say in what the cost pages say about what coverage does not reach. The figures on this site come from government documents and national health bodies, and no partner had anything to do with them.

The figures behind all of this, and the documents they came from, are set out on the cost page.
